Urgent: Lame Duck Congress to Attack Right to Boycott
Send an email to your Senators and Representatives today. Please feel free to add your own words to the email.
The lame duck Congress is weighing a last minute sneak attack on our First Amendment right to boycott. And they need to hear from you right now.
For two years now, we’ve fought to stop the unconstitutional Israel Anti-Boycott Act. And thanks to an outpouring of opposition from individuals like you, this First Amendment violating bill has been stalled.
But now the bill’s sponsor, Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD), is working behind the scenes to sneak the Israel Anti-Boycott Act into the must-pass end of the year spending bill. If Cardin accomplishes this, his civil liberties shredding bill could become law without any meaningful debate.
This is urgent!
Please contact your Senators and Representatives now and tell them to reject this undemocratic maneuver to pass an unconstitutional bill.
Supporters of the bill don’t hide the fact that it is intended to crush a nonviolent movement they do not like.
This pernicious anti-boycott bill is designed to silence supporters of Boycotts, Divestment, and Sanctions for Palestinian rights. It imposes criminal penalties for participating in boycotts of Israel or its settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territories called for by international organizations, such as the United Nations or the European Union.
Political boycotts are protected by the First Amendment. Every challenge thus far to a state anti-BDS law has resulted in rulings that they likely violate the First Amendment.
This bill is unconstitutional. Tell Congress it needs to be rejected, not sneaked through by a lame duck Congress in an omnibus spending bill.
The original version of this bill included jail time as a penalty. In response to widespread citizen outrage and challenges from First Amendment experts it’s been amended to remove that and some its worst provisions. But First Amendment experts agree--the revised version is still unconstitutional.
The fundamental purpose of the bill is impermissible. Congress cannot legislate to silence one side of a political debate. Tell Congress to reject this bill.
