We urgently need your action today! Last week, it was reported that Trump’s Attorney General William Barr is seeking expansive new police powers in the wake of the coronavirus crisis - including the ability to detain individuals indefinitely without due process.
Will you email your members of Congress today and tell them to stop the Trump Justice Department’s blatant power grab?
We cannot allow the Trump administration to use a public health crisis to undermine our rights. During a time when we should be coming together to address a common enemy, William Barr is choosing to use it as an opportunity to continue his assault on our constitutional rights. Congress needs to hear from YOU.
Email your members of Congress today and demand that they don’t give in to Trump’s call for expanded police powers!
Last week, POLITICO reported that the Justice Department approached Congress about expanding their powers to include the ability to detain people indefinitely without trial during national emergencies, like the novel coronavirus that is currently spreading throughout the United States.
POLITICO detailed the DOJ’s requests to Congress - requests that reportedly included dramatic new changes to the statute of limitations, asylum laws, deadlines on federal prosecutions, and the way court hearings are conducted. For many, this all but confirmed our greatest fear: that the Trump administration would use a crisis to push for authoritarian policies.
But we can stop this. The proposal didn’t get immediate support from Congress, but that could change at any moment. We need you to email your Congressional representation and tell them to vote against any attempt by Trump’s Justice Department to expand federal police powers and undermine our constitutional rights.
