We can’t let Trump occupy our cities with militarized federal forces that have beaten and maimed residents, showered them with chemical weapons, kidnapped them from the streets, and undermined their constitutional rights, under cover of an Executive Order to protect statues.
But that’s what’s happening in Portland.
I’m not being hyperbolic here.
Unidentified federal law enforcement agents in Portland, Oregon, have illegally arrested protesters, whisking them away in unmarked cars, and they have fired teargas and impact munitions on unarmed, mostly peaceful demonstrators. On July 11, for instance, they shot an unarmed protester in the face with an impact munition.
Take Action: Tell Congress to Defend Our Right to Protest From Armed Federal Thugs
DHS Acting Secretary Chad Wolf claims the heavily armed forces are needed to protect federal buildings and personnel from “violent anarchists,” but his list of allegations of “lawless destruction and violence” includes primarily graffiti, vandalism. As for threats to personnel, this list of accusations includes few, primarily throwing objects at heavily armoured agents, including “throwing animal seed at officers.”
We strongly condemn the use of violence against protesters.
Oregon Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley have introduced the Preventing Authoritarian Policing Tactics on America’s Streets Act as an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act. It would force federal agents to wear visible IDs, ban them from making arrests and detentions from unmarked vehicles, and limit their authority to conduct crowd control. This amendment is a good first step toward reining in and out of control DHS.
Tell your Senators to support the Wyden/Merkley amendment.
There is no easy solution to Trump’s determination to turn our cities into occupied zones. We know that Chicago is next on his list, and the target there will not be protesters, but Black and Latinx youth. These moves by this administration must be resisted locally and nationally, with creativity, perseverance and determination. We’re in it for the long haul. I hope you are with us too,
Stay Loud, Stay Strong,
