Journalists are under attack around the world and in the U.S. Help us defend global press freedom by taking action against the U.S. prosecution of Julian Assange.
The Trump administration took the unprecedented step of indicting Assange under the Espionage Act - marking the first time that a publisher of truthful information has been indicted under the Espionage Act.
Now, with newly-confirmed Attorney General Merrick Garland atop the Justice Department, we are again calling on the DOJ to drop extradition proceedings against Julian Assange, who is still being held in London's Belmarsh Prison. Assange's alleged crimes involve publishing documents provided by whistleblower Chelsea Manning that exposed cases of civilian killings, torture, abduction, and disappearances in Iraq and Afghanistan.
There are dire free speech consequences should the legal persecution of Assange continue: investigative journalism and press freedom will be compromised in America, since news organizations publish classified information to serve the public interest. The American people deserved to know about the crimes committed in their name.
Take action by calling on the DOJ to drop the extradition proceedings against Assange and protect press freedom. Take action now!
Petition to AG Garland:
Dear Attorney General Merrick Garland:
Please drop the appeal of the decision by Judge Vanessa Baraitser of the Westminster Magistrates’ Court to reject the Trump administration’s extradition request of Julian Assange. We also urge you to dismiss the underlying indictment.
Assange's alleged crimes involve publishing documents that exposed cases of civilian killings, torture, abduction, and disappearances in Iraq and Afghanistan. The indictment threatens press freedom because much of the conduct described in the indictment is conduct that journalists engage in routinely. Many of the documents published by WikiLeaks were published by other news outlets as well, including The New York Times, The Guardian, Der Spiegel, Le Monde, and Al Jazeera.
This indictment threatens press freedom broadly and we ask that you drop it.
